Nokia Lumia 800 Factory Reset
January 17, 2012
Intro
So, after 2 years on Android I was brave enough to make the switch to Windows phone 7.5 (7.1!) and a brand new Nokia Lumia 800.
Initial impressions have been very good with both the OS and phone, but I felt compelled to write this short post before my opinions are fully formed, purely due to one major gripe!
Being the security conscious soul that I am, after setting up the basic features (and some of the more advanced ones!) I got to setting a 4 figure security code.
I entered the code twice, sure that I knew what it was, set the timeout limit and went for a run. When I came back I was prompted for the code, no problem I thought, ****....password is incorrect, hmm, perhaps I typed it wrong I thought...****...password is incorrect...ok, this is annoying, perhaps I've set the wrong code by accident. I'll just reset the phone or call customer services to get it unlocked....how wrong was I!
Firstly, Orange (or your network provider) are unable to unlock your phone, pretty normal I guess, how would they know your code? surely though they can tell you how to reset the handset?...no, for that you need to speak directly to Nokia or 'refer to your user manual'..well, the user guide, via the link provided on the Nokia website reports 'cannot find a manual in that language'...great!
For those wondering if I was just being stupid and hadn't selected a language:
After finding an alternative link I found that resetting the code can apparently only be done in a 'Nokia care centre' and may incur additional charges, really? fantastic...
A couple more minutes googling around and finally found a link to reset the handset to factory settings....which requires you to have the phone unlocked at the time! yey!
How to factory reset
Finally I came across a blog post which does detail how to reset your device from the 'locked' state, so in the hope it will help some others, here are the steps.
NOTE: THIS WILL ERASE ALL OF YOUR PHONE CONTENT
- Turn the phone off, by holding the power button down for 10 seconds (till it vibrates)
- Hold down the volume down, camera and power buttons at the same time
- As the phone vibrates, release the power button, but continue to hold down the volume down and camera button for another 5 seconds
- Finally, release the volume down and camera buttons
Voila! your phone should now be factory reset. I hope this helps some people in my position!
